Soak the dark, exhausted media in a 1:1 solution of household non-scented bleach and water for 24 hours in a well-ventilated area until the beads return to their original light color. Rinse thoroughly, then soak in fresh water treated with a heavy dose of aquarium dechlorinator before placing it back into your filter.
