Description

Plant Profile

Cardamine lyrata, also known as Japanese Cress or Chinese Ivy, is an expressive East Asian marsh plant that brings a charming, vine‑like texture to aquascapes. Its light‑green, clover‑like leaves trail along fine, creeping stems, giving tanks a soft, whimsical touch. Highly adaptable, it can form lush midground bushes, creep into a low foreground carpet under high light and CO₂, or float at the surface to create a cozy canopy for fish fry and dwarf shrimp. It’s a plant that’s basically happy anywhere you let it grow!

*Form Notice: Photos display this plant in both its emersed (above-water) and submerged forms. Depending on nursery availability and seasonality, you may receive this plant in either form. Learn more about what to expect by reading our guide on Emersed vs. Submerged-Grown Aquatic Plants.

Key Features & Benefits

Clover-like foliage trails and adds visual texture.

Dense growth shelters fish fry, shrimp, and shy tank inhabitants.

Natural nutrient sponge that helps keep water clarity high.

Care & Planting Instructions

Remove lead weight (or pot) and cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the roots, then strip lower foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting.

Use fine-tip pinsettes to push individual stem clumps 1 to 2 inches into substrate, or allow stem clusters to float freely along the water surface.

Provide medium-to-high lighting and cooler water temperatures when possible (68–75°F preferred); adding pressurized CO2 encourages lower, creeping horizontal growth.

Maintain stable water parameters and avoid drastic environmental shifts to prevent leaf melt or rotting in delicate stems.

Trim stem shoots with straight scissors anywhere along the stem or pull apart dense clumps to propagate and maintain compact growth. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the lower leaves falling off my stem plants?

Lower leaf loss (leggy stems) usually occurs when lighting cannot reach the bottom of the plant due to overcrowding or shading from larger plants. Spacing individual stem clumps slightly apart during initial planting and maintaining adequate light penetration will keep lower leaves healthy.

2. Can I keep Cardamine Lyrata as a floating plant?

Yes! Cardamine Lyrata thrives when left floating along the water surface. Its trailing stems form a tangled green matrix that provides exceptional shade, absorbs nutrients heavily from the water column, and gives baby fry and shrimp a safe place to hide.

3. How do I transition Cardamine Lyrata from emersed to submerged growth?

When transitioning from emersed to submerged growth, plant bare stems securely into substrate under medium-to-high lighting and keep water parameters stable. As new growth adapts, the plant will shed its firmer land leaves and sprout delicate, ivy-like submerged foliage. Once new shoots develop, trim away old lower growth to encourage branching.
